The stunning Tulum Archaeological Site is one of the few ancient Mayan cities built by the sea. It used to be an important hub for trade and astronomy. One of its most remarkable structures sits atop the dramatic cliffs overlooking the Caribbean. This offers a captivating look into the rich heritage of the Maya civilization. Originally named Zama, meaning dawn in Maya. The Mayans chose this location for its strategic position above the reef, for astronomy, and for maritime trade along the Caribbean coast.
