Tulum is a compact coastal site with very little shade, so the morning runs hot and bright even in winter.

• The walking is flat but on uneven stone paths, with steps in a few places.
• Leaving Cancun around 6:30 AM gets you to the site by about 8:00 AM with almost no other visitors. A 7:00 AM departure also works well. If you leave closer to 8:00 AM, expect other tour groups arriving from about 9:30 AM onward.
• The beach below the ruins is open to the public, but it is rocky. We do not recommend climbing down to it.

• The only ancient Mayan city built directly on the Caribbean coast. Tulum sits on 12-meter limestone cliffs with direct ocean views and its own beach.
• Originally named Zama, meaning dawn in Maya. One of the first places in Mexico to receive sunlight each morning. The Mayans chose this location for astronomy, for trade, and for its defensive position above the reef.
• El Castillo served as a lighthouse. The most iconic structure at the site guided Mayan canoes through the Caribbean reef using torches and natural light through its two windows.
• The Temple of the Descending God and the Temple of the Frescoes contain original Mayan carvings and murals depicting Mayan cosmology and the agricultural calendar. Both are rare surviving examples of pre-Hispanic art in the Yucatan.
• One of the last inhabited Mayan cities. Tulum was still occupied when Spanish conquistadors arrived in 1518.

• Wear comfortable walking shoes, light clothing, sunglasses, and a hat. The site has limited shade.

• Eat a solid breakfast before your early pickup. It is a 1.5-hour drive and an active morning.

Photography is allowed throughout the site. INAH charges a separate $65 MXN fee at the entrance for video recording, and drones are prohibited. Tell us at booking if you plan to record video and we coordinate it at the gate for you.

Yes. You can cancel this excursion up to 24 hours before departure for a full refund. We only accept cancellation requests sent by email; requests through any other channel are not valid.
